Depression is an unpredictable and highly unpleasant beast, and one which often doesn’t follow a set pattern in terms of treatment and response. What works for one person, often doesn’t work for another, and that leaves sufferers in a quandary on where to go next.
Depression is considered to be down to a change in activity levels of neurotransmitters, usually Serotonin, Norepinephrine, and Dopamine. These are the three main neurotransmitters which are responsible for mood and how a person really feels; when there is a reduction or change in production, this can lead a person to feel low, down, and then depression sets in, taking things further downwards. Here at Trifecta Health NYC we are committed to helping our clients in their endeavors to win their battle with depression, paving the way to a brighter future.
The main treatment option for depression is down to anti-depressant medication, but this can often come with unpleasant side effects, or basically doesn’t work for certain people. One next step is the use of Ketamine to help with depression symptoms.
Under the watchful eye of highly skilled Dr Edward Fruitman, MD, here at Trifecta Health we understand that any treatment of this kind can be upsetting, but all our New York clients go through an in-depth consultation appointment, to identify the best treatment option for them. If Ketamine is thought to be a way forward, a series of tests will be undertaken, to check for any contraindications, before a testing injection is given, to give the patient peace of mind when it comes to any adverse reactions. If all is well, a regular injection is then given. The actual feeling of Ketamine in the system lasts for around two hours, and can leave the patient feeling a little drunk or intoxicated, but not unpleasantly so. When the patient is feeling aware and steady, they are discharged home.
How quickly does Ketamine work?
Following the initial ‘drunken’ feeling, the effects will wear off, but the improvement in depression symptoms should be evident in around 24 hours of the injection. In order to maintain this benefit, a treatment needs to be completed twice per week for the first two weeks, and then weekly. The main aim is to create a better mood and feeling for the patient, and then transfer onto a more mainstream anti-depressant medication for maintenance of symptoms thereafter.
Is Ketamine for depression safe?
Here at Trifecta Health NYC we are highly trained in treating all kinds of depression with a various field of treatment types. We test all our patients very carefully to check for any contraindications to Ketamine treatment, before deciding on the best way forward. The actual dose of Ketamine giving during a treatment is around ¼ of that given during a traditional anaesthetic, so it is actually quite small, considering the huge benefit it gives a person from their depression symptoms.
