For adults with ADHD, just getting out of the house on time can be a chore.
Distractions, stress and difficulty concentrating all mount up to a moment of misery before even leaving the house.
Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be this way, and a few coping strategies can go a long way to focusing the mind and helping to make life that little bit easier.
One of the main symptoms of ADHD in adults is being easily distracted, and a great way to combat that is to take a breath, be realistic and set targets. Do not be afraid to delegate! You’re a human being, you can only do so much, and not being superwoman or superman, does not make you a lesser person!
Planning is a great way to organise time, so in the evening, think about what you need to do, if you can, do a little pre-preparation, such as packing your bag, do it now. Then relax. The next morning, gather your things, and give affirmations, such as ‘I am leaving the house now’ – then do it. Ignore any other jobs, they can wait. You could even plan to arrive early, to allow time for any little unforeseen problems, such as traffic, and your stress levels will be lower as a result.
It sounds simple, but when distractions and trying to multi-task too much strikes, it can all become somewhat blurry, and that’s when frustrations begin.
Often we set patterns and precedence that we don’t even realise, and it’s a good idea to ask a family member or a close friend for their opinion on this. Another person’s view on what you could change is invaluable, but don’t take it personally – this is good feedback, which will give you ideas on how to make life easier. Little changes to routine can mean big improvements.
While ADHD can make life difficult, small changes can make sure it doesn’t win in the battle to live life to the full. Explore the little alterations you can make, and manage your time more effectively.
